4 Tips to Help Brands Compete for Consumers’ 8-Second Attention Span

Our content team is focusing on how brands can deal with a huge issue — the shrinking consumer attention span. It’s an issue marketers reinforce when we create content that’s not relevant to our audience, or when we leverage platforms incorrectly — for example, using Facebook as if it were solely a reach vehicle.

Research shows the average consumer attention span has shrunk from 12 seconds to a mere eight seconds. This eight-second window is even more troubling when you consider the average goldfish attention span clocks in at nine seconds.

Too Long; Didn’t Read (tl;dr)
In the article “Four Tips to Create Content in a tl;dr World,” I outline four ways to adapt our content creation efforts to be effective in light of the attention-span shrink.

If we’re not creating stories that are mutually relevant to the brand and its audience, we’re simply making noise.

By adding to the cacophony of useless content, we’re making an alarming issue even worse.
